On April 23–24, the kick-off meeting of partners in the Erasmus+ project took place in Pardubice (Czech Republic), bringing together representatives of firefighter training institutions from Latvia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Slovakia. During the meeting, the international project “What does it take to become a safe firefighter?” was officially launched.
This was the first partner meeting, during which participants discussed the main objectives of the project, upcoming challenges, planned activities, and other important organizational and content-related issues. Significant attention in the discussions was given to strengthening the safety culture among firefighters, improving the quality of training, and highlighting the importance of international cooperation.
The SAFE FIREFIGHTER project aims to provide instructors with innovative tools and psychological insights that help shape a new safety culture in firefighter training. Partner representatives will share best practices from working in high-risk rescue situations and pass this knowledge on to colleagues, thereby contributing to the improvement of training quality for both future firefighters and experienced professionals.
The project will also develop modern digital training tools – podcasts and video training materials – for the firefighter community. One of the key topics is the so-called “No Hero Syndrome” principle, which emphasizes safe and professional work in high-risk environments without unnecessary risk-taking.
Among the main objectives of the project there are these main points:
- Strengthen the firefighter community and promote the exchange of best practices in safety (CBRN incidents, water rescue, high-altitude operations, and firefighting);
- Engage instructors, trainees, and leadership in discussions about modern safety challenges in the firefighter work environment;
- Introduce innovative communication tools into the training process;
- Improve training programs by integrating international experience and practical safety protocols.
The SAFE FIREFIGHTER project marks an important step toward creating a more professional, safer, and more motivating training environment for firefighters across Europe. It is expected that the developed methodological recommendations, video materials, and podcasts will contribute to educating a new generation of well-prepared, safety-conscious, and responsible firefighters.
